Trend in Farming

Today there has been a decline in the trend of farming. There are a few factors that have given it a setback. Population, pollution, poverty etc are the few factors that have led to the decline. There has been a drastic decrease in the number of people engaged in farming. The land earlier used for farming is being used for constructing new houses, malls, complexes etc.
Looking at the stastics of UK alone it has been found that the number of regular workers has declined from 105,000 in the year 1996 to 62000 in the year 2007 and that of total workers has declined from 246,000 in 1996 to 182,000 in 2007. This is the result of increasing prices of equipment used for farming like tractors, drills, sprayers etc. as well as due to introduction of better machines which has reduced the requirement of workers.
If we focus on the agricultural area, 18,750,000 hectares of land in 1996 compared to 18,602,000 hectares in 2007.  And for crops 4,722,000 hectares in 1996 compared to 4,350,000 hectares in 2007, shows that the agricultural sector has been stagnant in the country for more than 10 years.
Over the years the contribution of farming towards the economy and income generated, has dropped to almost half the amount. Survey shows that agricultural contribution to economy in year 2007 was 5753 million pounds compared to 10069 million pounds in 1996.
So the farming has a declining trend today and major steps should be taken to enhance the quality and quantity of the food generated from farming.

Organic Farming

Organic farming is a form of agriculture which consists of methods like crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control and strictly limiting the use of any synthetic fertilizer or genetically modified organisms. Approximately 30.6 million hectares of land worldwide is farmed organically. This method of farming is legally regulated and enforced by a number of nations which follow some standards set by IFOAM and Umbrella Organization. One another organization OFAN tells about various federal policies that directly affect organic farmers, and provides educational tools about how to effectively improve the farming. Enhancing soil health is the basic concern stone of organic farming. Due to the increased concern for the risk to human health, as well as the recent and ongoing development of pesticide resistance, need to reduce use of pesticides is well recognized, the solution of which is also given by Organic Farming. This also helps in controlling erosion, promoting biodiversity. Organic fertilizers like seed meal, greensand, potash etc enhance the health of soil. Organic products stand out as having higher levels of secondary plant compounds and vitamin C though as far as carbohydrates and minerals, organic products are no different from conventional products. Additional toxic acids and antioxidants are additional benefits. Thus these have a clear advantage over traditional farming. Thus it is rightly said that the role of organic agriculture, whether in farming, processing, distribution, or consumption, is to sustain and enhance the health of ecosystems and organisms from the smallest in the soil to human beings.

Issues of Farming

Farming is raising of crops and animals on a piece of land. It requires lots of physical work as well as funds. There are many issues that revolve around farming. From physical fitness to insufficient funds and from deficiency in water to climatic issues. Following are these issues discussed in detail.
The work of farming is heavy and involves working alone for longer durations. This alleviates the efficiency and leads to illness. Using of machinery such as tractor and its accessories results in deaths and severe injuries. Farmers even face the problem of musculo-skeletal injuries from continuous lifting and carrying of load.
Farming requires use of machinery such as tractors, planter, drill, sprayer etc. which requires lots of input of funds. It has been seen that in developing countries most of the farmers are poor and often end up in taking loans from banks and private institutes at high rate of interest. This has resulted in mental pressure and many suicide cases have been witnessed.
Soil and water are essential components of farming. Deficiency in rainfall, water supply as well as declining of water table adds to the decreasing quality or fertility of the soil. Soils that are heavy in texture contain 40% of clay. Continuous cultivation in this soil has resulted in development of plough layer, which restricts the entry of irrigation water in deeper layers.
Increasing aberrations in climatic parameters like sudden change in temperature, cold, frost, heat waves, are adversely affecting crops. This can be overcome by construction of subsidized net-houses, which maintain the temperature and reduce the amount of water required.

Farming And Education

Farming is the branch of agriculture which deals with the business on farms and Education changes everything, it opens doors, elevates people, and can make this world a much better place. Farming education thus is the instruction about crop production, livestock management, soil and water conservation and various other aspects of agriculture. It also includes instruction in food education such as nutrition. It helps improving the quality of life for all people by helping farmers increase production, conserve resources, and provide nutritious foods. The four major fields may be Elementary Farming Education, Secondary Farming Education, College Farming Education and General Farming Education. Elementary farming is taught in public schools and private schools, and deals with such subjects as how plants and animals grow and how soil is farmed and conserved. Vocational farming trains people for jobs in such areas as production, marketing, and conservation. College farming involves training of people to teach, conduct research, or provide information to advance the field of agriculture and food science in other ways. General education farming informs the public about food and agriculture. Some youth organizations involved in farming education include 4-H and FFA which carry out various projects dealing with conservation, food and farming, health and safety and other issues. Thus the rapid growth of farming education is leading to the use of modern farming methods that require fewer farm workers. Another major result of this change is the creation of larger farms and ranches. This development will increase the need for more agriculture science and education.

Types of Farming

Farming is the branch of agriculture which deals with business on the farms. All the food comes from farming, may it be crops or the animals that are raised at farms. It is one of the most important occupations in the world. It can be classified into a few types like ranching, mixed farming, diversified farming etc.
Ranching - It is the practice of grazing animals on public lands. It can also be used for raising livestock. Ranching is very commonly found in Australia and Tibet. In India ranching is mostly found in hilly regions.
Single and Multi-crop Farming – It is a type of a specialized farming where a farmer specializes in crop enterprises and decides to raise single or multi-crop in accordance to the market requirements and to ensure optimum utilization of resources.
Dry and Irrigated Farming – It is found to be in places deficient in rainfall and where other sources of irrigation are not found. Due to deficiency of water, the land is hard and low in fertility. On the other hand irrigated farming is found to be in places where plenty of water is found.
Diversified Farming – It is referred to a type of farming in which a farmer raises more than 3-4 types of crops on the same farm. But it may result in poor resource utilization.
Mixed Farming – it is the combination of raising two different types of crops on the same farm. It is a special case of diversified farming. A typical case of mixed farming is crop cultivation and livestock farming.
